Gastronomy And Getaways

FoodA holiday just wouldn’t be the same without some fabulous food along the way. When you jet off to foreign climes, do you try the local food or stick with what you know? Whether it’s meatballs and herring in Sweden or garlic snails and frogs’ legs in France (apologies for the sweeping culinary stereotypes), it’s good to eat like a native and try something you may not have tasted before.

However, a survey conducted by travel portal TripAdvisor has revealed that nearly half of all Indians who go on holiday outside their home country choose Indian food over the alternatives. The survey, which spoke to 1,200 people, also found that just one in ten Indians choose European or continental food. Perhaps testament to the fact that when you know how good Indian cuisine tastes, why settle for anything else?

The ‘Dining Out On Vacation’ survey was looking at the eating habits of Indians in foreign locations and also revealed that 70% of Indian travellers research restaurants and dining options before making their trip. It also suggests that they have developed something of a penchant for a fine dining experience whilst away.

As well as looking for a more refined dining experience when travelling, the survey also revealed that Indians are beginning to go on holiday with the sole purpose of experimenting with local cuisines. With one-third of respondents saying they would happily book one of these ‘foodie vacations’, their popularity is on the up, but has still some way to go to match thepopularity of these tours with travellers from countries such as the UK, for example.

For most Indians (and most people you speak to), food is an extremely important part of the travelling experience. Used to the meals they can buy on long train journeys across the Indian sub-continent, Indians travelling further afield place great emphasis on making food part of the experience.

Despite one in two Indians preferring to eat Indian cuisine when away, the survey also revealed that 92% of respondents feel that food connects them with the culture and tradition of a country. It also states they make a point of trying the local speciality dish at least once on their trip.

The survey goes on to reveal that Indians tend not to worry about eating unhealthy food. More than 70% of respondents stated that they felt the taste of food far outweighed its lack of nutritional value. Surely a recipe to ensure a delicious culinary experience on every holiday?

London has many of the kind of fine dining restaurants 50% of Indian travellers would love to frequent when visiting the UK. The capital’s fine Indian restaurants serve food that is inspired by the exotic, regional tastes of India. Whether it’s a Michelin-starred experience, traditional dishes given a contemporary edge or India’s finest street food, these restaurants deliver for all tastes and budgets. They are also a great place to eat if you are just on a weekend getaway in the capital. So don’t hold back, you deserve a culinary treat.
